London JavaScript Night

What?

It's a night of talks that are in someway related to the JavaScript language.

Where?

We will be meeting in the New Cavendish Street campus of Westminster University. This is in the shadow of the BT Tower, the nearest tube stations are Great Portland Street, Warren Street and Goodge Street. You will find a map here or via StreetMap . Who's Talking?

• Greg McCarroll - Introduction & Why JavaScript? Why Now? (10 minutes).

  The business side of the web 2.0 buzzwords.

• Mark Fowler - Introduction to JavaScript (10 minutes).

  Description TBA.

• Paul Hammond - JavaScript Idioms (30 minutes)

  As with any language, Javascript has developed a set of idioms. Understanding them is essential to reading typical javascript code, and offers an insight into the realities of writing client-side code on the web.

• Simon Willison - JavaScript Taste Testing (30 minutes).

  JavaScript libraries such as Dojo, prototype, script.aculo.us and the Yahoo! UI Library promise to reduce the pain of JavaScript development. What problems do these libraries solve, and how should you go about choosing the right one for your project?

• Ross Lawley - Rico (5 minutes)

  Description TBA.

• Dan Webb - DOMBuilder (5 minutes)

  A brief intro (with a few examples) to DOMBuilder, a JavaScript library for creating complex DOM structures easily so you can avoid overusing innerHTML.

• Tom Carden - Mapstraction (5 minutes)

  Mapstraction is a library which provides a common API for Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft's javascript mapping APIs to enable switching from one to another as smoothly as possible. The aim of Mapstraction in mainly to protect companies building commercial products on top of Google Maps from changes to terms and conditions, the introduction of ads, or the emergence of a competing library with better maps, different imagery or preferable licensing terms. Mapstraction additionally fills some holes in Yahoo and Microsoft's current offerings, bringing them up to speed with Google Maps, and will also talk to OpenStreetMap for people who want to build maps without restrictions on derived works.

• Andrew Phillipo - Writing your own Google Maps (10 minutes)

  I'll be talking through a range of topics on the road to writing your own panning map solution; topics include clipping, moving the map, moving the tiles, tips and tricks, and complex overlays using image maps. All in about 10 minutes too :-).

• Tom Insam - E4X (5 minutes).

• Dominic Mitchell - CGI::Ajax (5 minutes).

  "This AJAX stuff is really quite easy :-)."

• Rob McKinnon - Javascript for fun and profit! (5 minutes).

  Information is power - with javascript you can give yourself an edge when you're playing with markets online. Will demo examples of javascript/greasemonkey hacks for the yahoo!/o'reilly Tech Buzz Game, yahoo! finance portfolios, and currency rate tracking.

• Leo Lapworth & Leon Brocard - EdgeComputing with JavaScript (10 minutes)

  JavaScript, Cookies, JSON and a bit of magic, putting customization load on the client not the server and why you should hide the pixie dust.
