Randomness Guide to London review

Location

Gerrard Place is a short street running between Shaftesbury Avenue and the east end of Gerrard Street (the main street in Chinatown). When we meet for dim sum, we gather outside by 12:55pm, with the aim of sitting down by 1pm. (If you are going to be late, ask us to save you a seat, and meet us inside.)

About Dim Sum

A dim sum meal consists of many small dishes ordered as and when desired, so it is perfectly possible to join in part way through; but since most people will have to return to work afterwards, we do need to start on time. The cost of the meal varies depending on how many dishes are ordered, but the bill excluding drinks other than tea (which is provided free) is generally about a tenner per person.

Unfortunately, dim sum does not work very well for vegetarians, and not at all for vegans. You can find out more about dim sum on Wikipedia.

By Tube

The closest Tube station is Leicester Square (Piccadilly Line and Northern Line (Charing Cross branch). Take the “Charing Cross Road (West)” exit from the station and turn immediately left. Walk along this road (Charing Cross Road) and take the second left into Newport Court. At the end of Newport Court, you'll enter a small square with restaurants and small shops displaying exotic vegetables. Walk across this, bear right, and you'll be in Gerrard Place, with Gerrard Street leading off to your left. The New World is halfway up Gerrard Place on the left.

Tottenham Court Road (Central and Northern Lines) and Piccadilly Circus (Piccadilly and Bakerloo Lines) are also reasonably close.

By Bus

Numbers 14, 19 and 38 go along Shaftesbury Avenue and numbers 24, 29 and 186 go along Charing Cross Road.
