Key Criteria

*	Considerable experience programming (modular and
object-oriented) Perl. 
*	Good software engineering skills - writing clean, modular code
with good API documentation and unit test coverage. 
*	Strong Unix systems skills (ideally with Solaris and Red Hat
Linux). 
*	Familiarity with SQL and relational databases. Experience of
perl DBI. 
*	Detailed knowledge of CGI and modperl programming (including
security & scalability). 
*	Familiarity with a broad range of CPAN modules. 
*	Knowledge of HTML and JavaScript with an awareness of
cross-browser/platform compatibility. 

The following skills and experience are very useful. (Some of these
skills (ideally 4 - 5) would be ideal - we are not expecting the
shortlisted candidates to have everything!!!) 

*	Experience with Oracle 9i, MySQL. 
*	Writing perl modules for CPAN. 
*	Experience of porting CGI applications to mod_perl. 
*	Familiarity with XML, DTDs and XML Schemas, and XSLT. 
*	Unix Systems Administration, networking and hardware upgrading. 
*	Experience with Apache web server configuration. 
*	Familiarity with CVS, subversion, make, Devel::Cover,
Devel::DProf etc. 
*	Experience with Activestate perl, PPM etc on Windows. 
*	Programming experience in Ruby including Rails, Java using
Spring and Hibernate. 
*	Writing perl extensions (XS or SWIG) in C/C++. 
*	Knowledge of wxWidgets / wxPerl and the Win32 API. 

 

AIMS OF THE JOB 

*	To develop, manage and document high quality components for
interactive web sites, data processing pipelines and a content
production framework. 
*	To contribute to the provision of a content production and
software development infrastructure. 
*	To support the Head of Software Engineering in ensuring Vision
Multiplatform makes the best use of available technology in the
planning, preparation and presentation of its internet site and related
media. 
*	To contribute to the long-term development and sharing of skills
within the Software Engineering team. 
*	To communicate technical information to the rest of the
department in a concise and understandable manner.
