PHP / Web-Based Database Developer - Fixed Term Contract – London -UK

Play a key part in the development of a web based genomic database for
Discovery Informatics!

Join a world-leading centre of excellence, and the major centre in the
UK, for research on infectious diseases in their specialist area in
addition to being one of eight research institutes sponsored by the
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

Our client’s mission is ‘to deliver high quality fundamental, strategic
and applied science into infectious animal disease and, from that
knowledge, to advance veterinary and medical science, enhance the
sustainability of livestock farming, improve animal welfare, safeguard
the supply and safety of food, and protect public health and the
environment.’ 

They are focused on understanding the intimate interactions between
pathogens and their hosts, with a view to developing improved strategies
to control, prevent or limit infections. Linked to this goal will be
practical advances in the rapid and accurate diagnosis of infections,
differentiation between infected and vaccinated animals, improvement in
current vaccines, development of new control methods, expansion of
surveillance and reference laboratory capacities, and the further
development and improvement of epidemiology and modelling capabilities.

This particular project is aimed at bringing together important research
data across a number of remote sites. The supervising manager will need
to you to demonstrate confidence and experience in relation database
development and design. Although much of the design is already in place
this site still needs strong functionality and a reliable user
interface. You will be working closely with the Head of Bioinformatics
and liaising with the commissioning laboratory to develop the interface
using PHP and MySQL, SQL Server or PostgresSQL in addition to dynamic
website and or web front end design languages such as Perl, BioPerl.
This opportunity offers you the chance to not only to play a key role in
the design and development of this collaborative site but also to liaise
and work with leading scientists and other people across the research
community. It may lead to an offer of more lucrative work from the
sponsors, or perhaps even permanent employment which has happened many
times in the past.

Ideally you should have a recognised qualification in either
Bioinformatics, Biological Data Analysis, Proteomics, Genomics and or
experience in the development of scientific websites / information
systems.

Experienced Web Applications Developer / Perl – Java – London - UK

This role would give you a perfect opportunity to join a small but
highly renowned specialist scientific software company who have
developed a superb reputation with many of our clients in the scientific
industry. The location is in Central London.

Our client was founded in 1998 to develop and market the software needed
to use mass spectrometry data in proteomics applications. The company is
headquartered in London, UK with offices in Boston, USA and Tokyo,
Japan. Their lead product is a software suite for protein identification
and characterization by matching mass spectrometry data against protein
or nucleic acid sequence databases. Evidence for the popularity of this
product is provided by the number of mass spectrometry manufacturers who
choose to bundle it with their instruments. First off the block was
Bruker Daltonics, since joined by Shimadzu and Applied Biosystems.
Agreements with other leading manufacturers are in the pipeline.

The company develops and markets software for protein identification
using mass spectrometry data. Their products are used worldwide in life
sciences research.

They are seeking an experienced Web Application Developer / Webmaster to
take charge of designing and implementing significant funtionality
improvements to their reporting and user interface. This is currently
done using Perl scripts but we believe that there is great scope for
developing more use of Java and other more internet friendly coding that
does not "break browsers”. This is role where you can develop your and
design better methods of data exchange format with third parties using
XML or similar. Maybe you would good ideas to bring to the table in this
area. There is huge scope for this role, all you need is vision and
enthusiasm to fit well within this friendly and expanding company
environment.

You will obviously need to be self-motivated and able to work on complex
projects as an individual and as a member of a small team.

Essential:

       3years experience with Perl / CGI / HTML / JavaScript development
is a requirement; if you are not an expert in any of these key
technologies please inform New Discovery

       XML concepts and tools

       Understanding of how the web works - HTTP, cookies, browsers,
servers, etc.

       The ability to design, code, test, debug, optimise and document
complete software modules

Desirable:

       PHP & Python

       SQL

       User Interface Design

       Windows and Linux system administration

       Any knowledge of bioinformatics or mass spectrometry

This position is based near Kings Cross London.
