We are looking for an experienced Perl developer for a three month
on-site project. Ideally starting early May.


** About Us

Lokku Ltd. was started in April 2006 by two founders and has grown to
a team of 10 including 4 full time software engineers.  Our primary
product is the Nestoria property search engine which we operate in the
UK, Spain, Italy, and Germany.  Lokku Global HQ is in Shoreditch,
London.  Our team very international in outlook and composition.  Many
of us have worked previously for big internet names like Yahoo! and
Amazon as well as other startups in the US and Europe.  Lokku is a
strong believer in free and open source software and is an active
sponsor and contributor to several groups and projects including the
London Perl Mongers, YAPC::Europe, and OpenStreetMap.


** Project

All new code is to be written in Perl.

This work is not a government secret, but we prefer not to share all
of the details in a public posting.

In general terms, we need a solution to a large and complex optimization
problem that involves the optimized gradual evolution of a large graph
in response to a dynamic set of objective criteria.  Our plans for this
system will require a solution that can be scaled up easily as we apply
it to larger and larger problem sets and narrow the runtime requirement
from days down to hours.

A complete set of product requirements have been generated by a
non-technical product manager.  You will be responsible for generating
the software and system design and implementing that design.  You will
have the assistance of other Lokku technical staff, but you will be
doing the bulk of the design and coding.  Depending on the design, this
project may involve formal mathematical methods and "cloud" or grid
technologies like Amazon EC2 or similar.

This is an opportunity to build a complete, re-usable technology
component that will be deployed in many different contexts.


** Profile

You have at least 5 years of experience writing software in Perl
for UNIX-like operating systems.
You have experience designing large object-oriented software
libraries .
You've worked with distributed systems and large-scale data sets.
You unit-test even unit-tests. And write a test case to make sure
it actually ran.

Background in formal mathematics or optimization is a big plus.

Knowledge of dataware-house systems, Amazon EC2 and distributed
computing a plus.


** Compensation

Cash compensation depends on experience, but competitive with market
rates and structured to heavily incentivize on-time delivery.

You work on-site in our London Shoreditch office.  Flexible working
hours.  Laid back start-up atmosphere.  Opportunity to learn from
one of London's successful Internet start-ups.
