Quoting isn't just a band-aid for clients that don't support threading.
Neither SMTP nor NNTP guarantee ordered delivery of messages, and
out-of-order delivery happens more often than you might think.

As it happens, my client is very smart and both shows the thread and
highlights the gap, but they have inexplicably omitted the feature where it
can display the content of messages that it knows exist but haven't arrived
yet.
