The sensor is an analogue device so it can't be 12 bit. The ADCs
produce 16 bit info, but Nikon's RAW compression isn't as good as
Canon's so they chop off 4 bits of data that they say you can't see
(kind of like how minidiscs did with sound) in order to get the file
size smaller.
