I come from a similar type of area and was reading the newspaper to my
grandpa around 4. I used to sit on his lap while he read the paper and
I would point to stories and he would initially read them to me. As his 
cataracts progressed, I had to do the reading. Being taught to read via
newspaper stories is not ideal though :-)
