Next month is once again approaching (in that once every roughly 30 days
way that it does) so consider this fair warning that the July Social
will be held in the John Snow pub on Broadwick Street in Soho.

There are several interesting things about this meeting.

5. The John Snow pub is situated with sight of both mine and
Adam-the-pub-tsar's work. How weird is that?

4. The pub is named after Dr John Snow who identified that an outbreak
of Cholera in London in 1854 was centered around a water pump which
   still stands outside the pub.

3. It has nothing to do with Jon Snow - a British TV presenter for
Channel 4 and Cousin of Peter Snow, a BBC TV presenter

2. The pub sits on Broadwick street which was once the location of mass
'dance off' as two gangs, known as The Sharks and The Jets struggled
to gain control of the neighbourhood. Rumours that London.pm
founder Dave Cross was somehow involved have been strenuously
denied by the Cross camp although witnesses have since observed
Cross snapping his fingers menacingly and sporting a quiff.

And the number 1 interesting thing about this meeting

1. Property startup Nestoria have kindly agreed to sponsor this meeting
by sticking some cash behind the bar. Given that The John Snow is a
Sam Smith's pub this is bound to go a fairly long way. Nestoria also
sponsor the Mapstraction project which Tom Carden talked about at the
   Javascript night last month.

In return for plying you with booze they'd appreciate it if you look
at the site and gave them some feedback and an idea of what sort of
features you'd like for their API and other Web 2.0 (how now!)
considerations like the nifty ability to get tight rss feeds for
searches in a RESTful manner. Although to be honest, I think that bit
might be broken. My feed for a 2 bedroom house in Kensington for
under 200,000 UKP isn't returning anything

They're also prepared to debate the various merits of Emacs over Vi.
Using knives/and or bats if necessary.

It's all done in fully Buzzword compliant Perl and it doesn't try and
shove mortgages down your throat or bombard you with popups (which
are, as any fule kno, *so* 1.0) so give the bruthas some *love*
   people.

Now the standard blurb ...

Social meetings are a chance for people to meet up face to face for a
quiet drink (alcoholic or not) A fair chunk of Perl is talked at the
meetings, but also people who have no interest in the language often
pop along to socialise. There's no charge to enter, no agenda, and we
tend to think of it more as pleasant drinks rather than any serious
  endeavour.

People normally turn up after work, and many stay until closing time.
Food is normally consumed at the pub by those wanting nourishment
though sometimes small groups of people head off for food either
  during or after the meeting.

And the directions ...

The John Snow is in the heart of Soho just off Carnaby Street near
Oxford Circus. It's also within walking distance of Leicester
Square, Tottenham Court Road, Bond Street and Picadilly.

>From Oxford Circus

Walk out the south east exit of Oxfrod Circus, preferably the one
that comes out onto Argyll Street. Either way, Argyll Street is
where you'll need to go so make your way south there. Cross
Malborough Street and continue and dogleg down Carnaby Street until
you cross Broadwick Street and head down there.
