I'm quite a fan of http://bahn.hafas.de (there's an English version  
of the site) for planning rail journeys because it gives a lot more  
detailed information on routes, and doesn't involve loads of clicking  
back and forth through the terrible "wizards" that the UK sites have.

It's tempting to write a screen-scraper for it, actually...
