If you like bit-twiddling and numerical manipulation tricks, you'll  
*love* the "Hacker's Delight" book. A lot of the material is  
targetted at the assembly-language programmer (i.e. compiler writers)  
but still worth reading even if your chosen language doesn't directly  
support the techniques as stated.
