Have you noticed that whenever you see 'this is a hack' it's (almost)
always somebody elses fault : the compiler, some other library, some
idiot application using your library, some idiotic library that links,
some idiot make system that doesn't work properly.

When that chunk of win2k source was leaked, there was an interesting
blog item about how many times the word hack appeared and how it was
almost entirely to do with working around 'idiots' who made mistakes
in other projects, whether the compiler, or (very frequently) office
or 3rd parties.
