It tracks across the "even with CPAN perl stuff can be a complete bitch to
install" problems that often put off newbies.
Mostly though it was that I was sleep-deprived, cranky, had been dealing with
complaints about that all day, spotted chromatic bitching about something else
and went off on one. Fortunately it looks like the end result is going to be
constructive. Apparently I'm lucky as well as impetuous :)
