Anything which is, itself a shebanged script needs env to act as a 
shebanger (so to speak).

I think, at the time, in order to allow it to just be 

#!/usr/bin/lumberjack

or whatever I did something like compile a C program that just did an 
exec on the Perl script or something equally hokey like that.
