He explains the conjunction of his two mildly good skills in the blog.

It's working for me at the moment: bitter old programmer plus a bit
of market risk domain knowledge acquired ten years ago equals a job  
spec and rate
I wrote myself, somewhere I love, doing the travel I like.

Being "just" a programmer isn't enough.
