when i switched to perl i was amazed by the power of its regexps, so i
tried to do everything using them (c.f. jwz).

i remember some very ugly stuff to parse squid logs and to
automatically generate router configurations and xfig diagrams based
on router interfaces, but merely at around 200 characters, nothing
like what's been sent so far. in my defense, though, each of them was
lovingly hand-crafted.
