Well neither is Perl the fastest, if you want that then you are looking
at hand optimised machine code. JITed Mono performs at least as well as
the MS .NET runtime on standard benchmarks, and faster than Java for a
lot of operations. However this entirely misses the point: what both
Paul and myself were addressing was "Programmer Efficiency" which is
far, far more important for the bulk of applications, especially web
applications.
