I've managed to lose data with md, but it does take a *lot* of effort
and/or stupidity to do it. It involved USB drives and a particularly
crazy configuration.

My favourite md-related misconfiguration - not one I've yet managed to
do myself - is to configure a two-disk RAID1 set with one disk for
data and one hot spare.
