Thanks for all your help. The original problem was indeed solved by opening the input file with "<:encoding(UTF-8)". The "example" code also needed "use utf8;". Apologies for what must have seemed like some silly questions, but to me, Perl is but a means to an end, as I am by no stretch of the imagination a developer. Cheers, Andrew
