Depending on the age of the lens metering won't work at all and I
suspect this is what you're experiencing. Ignore any exposure the camera
recommends completely.

Set the camera to fully manual 'M' and use the dial on the back to set
the aperture and exposure length (using one of the buttons behind the
shutter release). Take the photograph and review the exposure on the
LCD, adjusting as appropriate.
