I didn't offer this before because I over-estimated the importance of
the sync updates.
IMAPFilter. It embeds Lua as a scripting language.

I've hit problems where it got upset with very large folders (several
tens of thousands of emails) when it would construct one rather long
IMAP command line, which Cyrus rejected, leading to IMAPFilter getting
its knickers in a twist.
Comes with manpages covering the command and its config files. Provides
a nice set of primitives for doing things like selecting sets of emails
of copying/moving/whatever else.
