FFmpeg/C developer

I've compiled and set up ffmpeg to do transcoding before.
Is it really that big a job you need to post a requirement here?
IME on some platforms it just works and on others it's a right bastard to
compile.
And then there's the separate issue that it seems to work until you give it
a media file it doesn't handle...
