There are a couple of alternatives...

* Yahoo's konfabulator thingy (which may well have come first, I don't 
know).
* Opera's widgets.
* KDE will be getting dashboard widget support when KDE 4 comes out.
* There's already SuperKaramba for KDE.
* JackField on Gnome supports Dashboard widgets.

In short, you've never had so many ways to get yet *another* clock on 
your screen...
