I am always intrigued by this from CPAN.pm:

    # install everything that is outdated on my disk:
    perl -MCPAN -e 'CPAN::Shell->install(CPAN::Shell->r)'

Could we simply
    perl -MCPAN -e 'print CPAN::Shell->r' >/tmp/x
    # upgrade my system [safe /tmp/x somewhere first!]
    perl -MCPAN -e 'CPAN::Shell->install(`cat /tmp/x`)'

I always forget to try it ;-)
